The CHAMPS Mission is to provide information on HIV to our community that empowers the members to end the HIV epidemic and to advance health equity in Mecklenburg County.
We have the tools to end the HIV epidemic in the United States and in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Although significant progress has been made, Mecklenburg County remains with the highest number of new HIV diagnoses in the State.
Recent advancements in medicine and technology have the power to improve HIV diagnosis, treatment and prevention. These tools can move us towards better outcomes and CHAMPS will improve communication on the burden of HIV.
However, these tools must be used effectively in response to information about HIV. They must reach people who may benefit from them. Disparities among populations and geographic areas must not be allowed to persist. CHAMPS can be used to help address these disparities.
The Mecklenburg County Community HIV/AIDS Monitoring and Prevention System (CHAMPS) dashboard can help.
CHAMPS is a website with an embedded dashboard, intended to provide important information on the HIV epidemic in Mecklenburg County. With up-to-date data, we can address ongoing barriers to HIV medical care and prevention. We can identify gaps in care and policy. We can enhance local efforts and programs to effectively reduce HIV in our community.
CHAMPS will make data readily accessible to the general public and will monitor progress toward the goals of the Getting to Zero Ending the Epidemic Plan.
The Getting to Zero plan, updated in 2022, includes four strategies for data gathering. These strategies mirror the national Ending the Epidemic (EHE) plan. They are to diagnose, treat, prevent, and respond to HIV. The CHAMPS dashboard is organized by these four strategies, also known as pillars. For example, in the diagnose pillar, there is data showing trends in new diagnoses. In the treat pillar, there is data on the total number of people living with HIV in our community.
The graph displays annual data for people who have been newly diagnosed with HIV, based on a confirmed positive HIV test.

The graph represents annual data for people taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) oral or injectable medication to prevent HIV infection. PrEP is taken by people who do not have HIV but may have an increased risk for exposure to HIV.
